A fragment of copper alloy and iron unidentified object, perhaps related to a knife, of probable 11th-13th century date. The object consists of an incomplete rectangular-sectioned bar with an old break (7.1x3.6mm) at one end and expanding into a rectangular terminal at the other. The bar is decorated along its narrower edges with a zig-zag of grooved rocker-arm and a short longitudinal groove in each resulting triangle. The wider faces of the bar carry tooling marks and have two c.0.8mm diameter piercings each now filled with copper alloy corrosion; it is presumed they originally perforated from one face to the other.
The rectangular projection is largely covered with orange-coloured iron corrosion but traces of rocker-arm decoration can be seen on both of the wider faces; these extend from the narrower faces of the bar. The decoration takes the form of two lozenges filled with paralleld rocker-arm lines close to the join with the bar, and visible only on face above this, two raised longitudinal rib with wavy horizontal deoration to either side. The rectangular projection measures 14.4mm long, 11.6mm wide and 6.7mm thick and at its outside edge appears to be split for a separate (now missing) iron blade.
The object measures 41.1mm in length, 11.6mm in max.width, 7.1mm in max.thickness and weighs 7.95g.

The date range is suggested given the similarity of decoration to objects such as the Waterford knife (http://irisharchaeology.ie/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/1-005.jpg 5), the Winterbourne knife (WILT-219C11) and a specific type of medieval buckle (eg. NMS-C92ACA, NMS-422014).
