Treasure Case 2019 T507. Description: Two heavily cleaned post-medieval silver sixpences of Elizabeth I (AD 1558-1603). The first coin has a crescent initial mark and a date above the shield of 1587. This coin has been partially clipped. Obverse legend: ELIZAB D G ANG' FR' ET HIB' REGI, crowned bust facing left, rose behind head. Reverse legend: POSVI DEV' ADIVTOREM MEV', long cross fourchee over royal shield, date (1587) above shield. North N2015. The second coin has an eglantine initial mark and date of 1575 over the shield. Obverse legend: ELIZABETH D G ANG' FR' ET HI' REGINA, crowned bust facing left, rose behind head. Reverse legend: POSVI DEV' ADIVTOREM MEV', long cross fourchee over royal shield, date (1575) above shield. North N1997.

Dimensions: Coin 1 = 25.5mm diameter, 1mm thick, 3 grams.
Coin 2 = 25.8mm diameter, 0.9mm thick, 3.2 grams.

Discussion: These two coins are of a similar date and issue and although cleaned by the finder are in a similar condition. It is probable that these two coins represent a small 'purse drop' which occurred c. AD 1590.

Conclusion: As these coins are made exclusively of silver, are two in number, over 300 years old and were found together, they represent a small 'hoard' and therefore qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
