Nine sherds of Medieval open vessel (cooking pot) probably dating to c. AD 1100 to 1300. Two rim sherds, one base sherd and six body sherds, The sherds have relatively fresh breaks. They are all potentially from one vessel with variation and colour and density of temper visible within sherds as well as between them although it is also possible two fabrics, one with more chert/quartz are present. The sherds mostly have a mid-orange surface with a mid-grey reduced core and some pale orange-buff areas on the inside of a body sherd and outside of one rim. The base is a pale grey throughout with a light buff shade on the outerface. The variation in colour may therefore relate the the different parts of the pots position within the firing.
The fabric has common (15%) medium sand temper, 10% rounded quartz and c. 10%-20% angular, patinated poorly sorted chert (up to 3mm), very occasional irregularly shaped soft white, probably limestone or lias inclusions (up to 3mm). It is not visibly micaceous and lacks the rounded ironstone often found locally.
The rims are dished with a slightly flattened but not thickened angled top edge where both the inner and outer sides curve up to meet the flat top. They are too small to estimate the diameter. The base is flat with the wal projecting up at 60 degrees, Although long it is too narrow to estimate the diameter.
The sherds weigh a total of 52.4 grams, of which 26.8 grams is the large base sherd.
It is probably a Greensand Derived fabric, local to the Blackdown Hills (Allan et al 2011).
