An incomplete copper alloy Roman bow brooch of Hod Hill type, dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch is hinged, with a rectangular notch in the centre of the head. Extending out either side are the wings, these are worn and broken. Covering most of the head is red brown iron staining. The head then decends into the bow which has a raised central ridge and raised edges, and is T shaped in cross section. About half way the bow narrows and there are two raised collars. The bow then narrows again before ending in a rounded terminal knop at the foot. Behind the foot is a triangular shaped catch plate, the outer edge is curved inward to hold the now missing pin. There is no decoration on the reverse.
The brooch has a dark brown patina, with patches of dark green. It measures 37.4mm in length, 10.8mm in width, and 2.61g in weight.
A similar brooch can be seen in Hattatt 2000, page 320, number 1501.
