A complete copper alloy early medieval strap end dating from AD 750-950, Class A type 2. The strap end is a long rectangular shape, with the edges of the strap end curving out slightly near the centre. It has a split attachment end, which is shaped along the edge with two rounded semi circular projections. In the centre of these projections are two circular perforations for the now missing rivets. Below this the strap end is decorated with incised lines in a patterned style.
The central panel has an indented cross with the arms running from each corner of the rectangular panel with curved sides. Inside the arms is a continued pattern of raised rectangles. In between the arms at the narrower ends are incised triangular motifs, in the other spaces between the arms are vertical incised lines. Below this panel is the terminal end, this is very worn. It narrows slightly to a rounded square end. There are two sets of double incised lines running diagonally across this section, intersecting in the centre. It is possible that there are two semi circular impressions above this representing ears of a zoomorphic animal, but it isn't clear. The reverse is undecorated.
The strap end has a mid green patina, and measures 38.2mm in length, 11.4mm in width, 2.7mm in maximum thickness across the split end, and weighs 2.73g.
Similar strap ends can be seen in Thomas 2003, page 3, specifically number 5.
