DRESS HOOK

Unique ID: KENT-ADA321

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete Post-Medieval copper alloy hooked tag, of late 16th century date.

Description: The surviving object comprises a trapezoidal attachment loop at the top which expands into tri-lobed plate with openwork decoration, broadly triangular in cross-section. There are moulded rosettes at the junction of the loop and the plate on the front. The openwork creates a design of a series of three loops. The missing hook would have projected from the point of the triangle; it is now missing along with the base of the plate. The object has an even light green patina. The old breaks are worn and the hook is slightly warped across its' body.

Measurements: 15.79mm long, 19.76mm wide, 1.54mm thick and 2.61g in weight.

Discussion: Read (2008, 110) illustrates similar examples, numbers 436-439, the decorative features on which he refers to as a Hungerford knot. He classifies them as Early post-medieval Class E, Type 5.

Class: Read Early post-medieval Class E,
Sub class: Type 5
