BROOCH

Unique ID: WMID-AA76D6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete enamelled colchester derivative hinged brooch, of early Roman dating (AD 75 to AD 130).

Around 75% of the brooch is present, consisting of the bow, wings and foot. Any enamel is missing, along with the pin.

The wings are tubular, with no wing caps present. A horizontal slot runs the width of the wings and contains traces of iron staining, suggesting the axis bar, still in situ, is made from iron. The top part of the hinge is present. The rest of the pin is missing. The head of the bow is triangular with four horizontal recessed panels, presumably for enamel, set centrally. Below this, the bow tapers to a rounded foot knop. Behind the foot knop is a triangular vertical catch plate. The folded edge, to retain the pin, is missing.

It measures 33.1 mm in length, 26.6 mm wide and 14.9 mm thick. It weighs 8.33 g.

The brooch is a light to mid green colour, with an even surface patina.

Several similar brooches have been recorded on the PAS database, including: NLM-5D4645, NLM-EA1892 and NLM-19AD64. Although Mackreth refers to this type as the East Midlands Enamelled type, he has noted it has been found in southern counties as well.

Class: Colchester derivative Hinged (Mackreth Group 9, East Midlands Enamelled)
Sub class: Mackreth 2011, CD H, 9.b plate 60.
