Incomplete copper-alloy Roman Trumpet brooch (c. AD 75 - 175). The brooch has a flared head reminiscent of a trumpet mouth. Behind the head is a tubular case for a hinge; the copper-alloy axis bar encased within this is visible at either end of the case, although the pin is missing. A D-sectioned bow curves down from the bottom of the head, punctuated approximately halfway down the front face by a transverse ridge, which is flanked by rows of raised squares - a motif typically thought to represent acanthus leaves. The bow terminates in a worn break, with a pointed ridge on the back face forming a catchplate. The object has a green patina. It is 28.77mm in length, 12.04mm in width and 4.21mm in thickness. It weighs 2.18g.
