A copper-alloy cartwheel penny of George III dating to 1797.
The coin has a raised rim on both faces and is moderately worn.
The obverse depicts a bust laureate facing to the right.
The obverse rim inscription reads GEORGIUS III D.G. REX.
The reverse depicts Britannia seated to the left.
The reverse description reads BRITANNIA 1797. The coin appears to be a second issue (Skingley 2007, 398).
During the second half of the 18th century, very little silver or copper was minted. Matthew Boulton's 'cartwheels' in 1797 produced the first copper Pennies and Twopences demonstrating improvements gained from the application of steam power to the coinage press (Skingley 2007, 387).
