A clipped Roman silver Siliqua of the House of Valentinian (364-378) and dating to AD 368-378 (Reece period 19). [VRBS ROMA] reverse type depicting Roma seated left holding globe and vertical sceptre. Mint of Trier.
Notes:
This type of clipping of late Siliquae, which removed the legends but left the emperor's portrait intact, most likely occurred during the first decade of the 5th century in order to re-use some of the remaining silver in the circulating coinage for hack-silver or the production of new copies. This may have been an attempt to extend the viability of the monetary economy in the waning years of Roman rule (Moorhead and Walton, 2014).
