Lead bi-conical spindle whorl of medieval date (c. AD 1250 - 1550). The object is circular in form and triangular in section, with a central circular perforation. The surface of the object is very worn and carries a white patina. Still visible, however, is a raised decorative pattern on both faces of a line that zig-zags between the inner and outer edges. The outer edge of the object is chipped. The spindle whorl is 32.18mm in diameter, 7.35mm in thickness and weighs 25.97g. The diameter of the central perforation is 8.99mm.
Lead spindle whorls are often difficult to date without archaeological context. Those that are bi-conical in form with raised, geometric decoration, however, have been dated to the medieval period through analogy with excavated examples.
