BACKED BLADE

Unique ID: NLM-2D9AE9

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Flint with cortex possible backed blade. A thin oval flake with broad flakes trimmed from its dorsal side and with a prominent bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curving edge, with a small striking platform reserved as a butt. A strip of cortex was retained, perhaps to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the opposite sharpened edge. The subsequent development of dense misty patina on all struck surfaces suggests the object subsequently endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Length: 33.1mm, Width: 30.2mm, Thickness: 5.8mm, Weight: 6.75gms
