An almost-complete coper alloy seal matrix dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1200-1400). The object is pointed-oval and flat, with a low central rib on the back, expanded at one end to form a suspension lug, now broken. The central motif on the face of the matrix depicts an Agnus Dei or Lamb of God, consisting of an animal (the lamb) standing in profile left (on the impression) with a long narrow flag on a pole behind. The inscription is worn in parts and difficult to read, but it is likely to be + S' hENRICI D WASTENEYS (Seal of Henry de Wasteneys). The object has a dark green patina.
The overall dimensions are as follows: 32.87mm in length, 20.19mm in width, 8.03mm in thickness and 11.43g in weight.
The de Wasteneys family appears to be a well-known medieval family holding land in Lincolnshire. Several first names of the male de Wasteneys are known - William, Anselm and Philip - but no Henry has yet been found.
