An unidentified copper alloy fragment, probably an Early Medieval or Medieval strap fitting, dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The fragment consists of a narrow strip of copper alloy, plano-convex in cross-section, and truncated by an old break at one end and a flaring, fan-shaped terminal at the other. The fragment is curved in profile. Vestigial sub-rectangular sectioned projections expand from the reverse of the fan-shaped terminal, one from either side. Although highly abraded, the juncture between the strip and terminal is expanded inot a zoomorphic animal head, with incised sub-triangular eyes. The expanded terminal is decorated with an incised cross with expanding arms, each arm containing transverse bars.

The fragment weighs 5.04g and measures 25.99mm in length, 15.12mm in width, 2.96mm in thickness asnd 5.8mm in height.

Although with different decoration, the fragment can be compared to Early Medieval strap fittings such as SUSS-34FCAE, a 'socketed hook' and WILT-BF15C1. The decoration is also fairly typical of this later early medieval date. cf. also much larger objects such as WILT-2E3C2D, which exhibit similar zoomorphic moulding.
