MIRROR CASE

A Medieval copper alloy mirror case, probably dating to c. AD 1250-1400. The mirror case survives almost complete, with the two elements still articulated. The mirror case consists of two cast discs with down-turned edges and from which project two lugs on one side and a single lug from the other, both on the longitudinal median line. The two discs are alligned so that the single lug fits between the corresponding pair on the other disc, with one group perforated to form a transverse hinge, retaining a separate copper alloy axis bar. Both discs are decorated with bands of punched addorsed triangles, with one following the longitudinal median line and a concave line in each angle, creating a cruciform appearance.

The hinge of the case remains freely articulated, and can be opened; the original glass of the mirror has been degraded but the cement which is retained around the edges reveals it to have originally been octagonal in shape.

Length 41.7mm; width 29.0mm; thickness 7.7mm; Weight 11.90g.
