A Post-Medieval silver two pence of Charles II (1630-1685)

Obverse: The monarchs bust has been badly worn and is no longer visible. Behind the head is II indicating the value of the coin (Skingley 2008, 320).

The legend is partly legible CA..OLVS/ D G/ BRI/ FRA/HI.

The complete inscription would have read CARLOVS/ D G/ MAG/ BRI/ FRA/ ET/ HIB/ REX which translates to 'Charles II by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'.

Reverse: Square shield on cross fleury within inner circle. Partial inscription remains visible CHRISTO/ AVS. The full inscription would have read CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO which translates to 'I reign under the auspices of Christ'
