LEAF ARROWHEAD

Unique ID: WMID-83AE73

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete leaf arrowhead dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead is formed on a brownish-grey coloured tertiary flint flake; both the dorsal and ventral faces are extensively retouched around all edges. The arrowhead is lentoid or pointed oval in plan and lentoid in cross section. The butt of the arrowhead has been trimmed and extensively reworked removing any trace of the striking platform or bulb of percussion. The ripples of percussion can be made out on the ventral face. At least one ridge is visible on the dorsal face. The retouch on the ventral face is short, scaled and semi-abrupt. The retouch on the dorsal face is long to invasive, scaled and low-angled.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 44mm in length, 21mm in width, 3mm thick and 4.5g in weight.

Notes:

Item was recovered from an archaeological dig at the remains of a Medieval moated site in Earlswood. The arrowhead was found in the upcast from the moat when the platform was being constructed in the 13th century. Photographs and dimensions kindly supplied by the finder.
