SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: LEIC-5C0436

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Medieval lead alloy seal matrix, 36mm in diameter, 6mm thick with a weight of 58.27grams.

The object is circular in form and rectangular in cross section. It has a slight triangular projection, the remains of a knop or loop and this is aligned with the start of the inscription, marked by a cross. The inscription reads SIGILL' : IIDECOLLE . The inscription is contained by a solid incised line which surrounds a six petal motif.

Malcolm Jones has helpfully suggested that the II could be an incomplete U which would then read UDE COLLE.

UDE could be a spelling of the first name Eudo (modern German Udo) which came over with the Normans and is attested in the form Eudo, Eudes. COLLE 'colle' is attested as a place name element meaning 'hill'. Or it could be II/A/U DE COLLE (of the hill).

Inscription: SIGILL' : IIDECOLLE
