Medieval coin: silver Venetian soldino of Agostin Barbarigo, Doge of Venice, dating from AD 1486 - 1501, minted in Venice.

Soldinios were known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as it was brought by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change: soldini in fact occur as English finds more often than proper halfpennies of the period.

Coins of Barbarigo are rarely found except for along the south coast of England (Daubney, unpublished, Identifying late Medieval Venetian coins), so this is an unusual discovery for Staffordshire.
