Roman (1st to 2nd century) Trumpet brooch: The bow head is oval with a perforated, incomplete vertical lug on the reverse. The spring and pin are missing. The bow head is decorated with a central ridge with a groove either side which tapers at the petalled knop. On the head, either side of the central decoration there is a circular cell, one cell is incomplete due to damage. The bow forms an inverted L-shape in profile, and just below the angle, there is a petalled knop with a collar above and below it. This decoration continues on the reverse of the bow. The lower portion of the bow is triangular in section and tapers to a broken foot. The lower portion of the bow tapers to a blunt break. The reverse of this portion of the bow has an incomplete catchplate.
The brooch has a shiny mid green patina and a shiny white metal coating.
It weighs 6.68g, and measures 11.17mm wide across the bow head and 34.39mm long.
The brooch is a Trumpet-headed type, possibly a Group D type but is less decorated or Group A, but more decorated than the usual examples, dating to the late 1st to 2nd century (Bayley and Butcher, 2004; 163). Mackreth classifies this brooch as Chapter 5, Part 1, Type 1a, Plate 78 which he dates to the second century.
