The base from a Roman grayware (GX) wheelmade vessel. The fabric is light grey in colour with slightly oxidised outer surface and margin. It is tempered with plentiful fine mica, poorly sorted rounded and angular quarz (<2mm) and occasional small flint fragments (<1mm). The base and outer surface is sooted in places. The base has curved, parallel lines on its outer surface from where it was removed from the wheel.
Judith Plouviez (per. com.) suggests that it may be of 2nd century or later date.
