Roman (AD c. 50-400) Initial T-shaped brooch (Mackreth 2011, Chap 3, Part 4, The Hinged Pin, Type 5k Plate 58); The copper-alloy brooch has a cylindrical crossbar which has a central slot on the reverse to allow the pin to be hinged. The axis bar is within the wings and has a fragment of the pin hinged to the axis bar. The wings are undecorated. The bow is hump-like and undecorated. The bow tapers towards a broken edge towards the foot and is a slender pointed oval in section. There is no trace of a catchplate.

It measures 26.36mm long, 15.13mm wide and it weighs 4g.

The brooch is an initial T-shaped brooch, which is described as being usually hinged, not enamelled, with no head stud and having fine decoration and date to the Flavian period, AD 69-96 (Bayley and Butcher, 2004: p. 159). Mackreth classifies this brooch as 2011, Chap 3, Part 4, The Hinged Pin, Type 5k and a similar example is on Plate 58 No. 2238 dating to the mid 1st to 4th century.
