Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy equal-arm brooch (c. 450-c. 550).

The pin and the end of one arm is missing.

The flat arms are sub-triangular in plan and the sides are slightly concave. Both arms have two parallel grooves which follow the outline of the border. There are also similar grooves along the median centre-line on the arm with the catch-plate. These centre-line grooves are not visible on the other arm. The strongly arched bow has a length of 14.2mm and a thickness of 3.7mm. It is carinated at the front and flat at the rear. The 'D'-shaped pin-lug is largely covered with a deposit of corroded iron, the remains of the axis bar, spring and pin. The catch plate is almost complete and the curled-over part that secured the pin-tip is missing.

This brooch is drab green with small areas of active corrosion and has traces of a white metal coating. The break on the arm is very recent.

Length: 35.5mm; width: 13.0mm; overall thickness: 16.1mm. Weight: 5.51g.

Class: long equal arm
