A complete enamelled copper alloy medieval harness mount. The mount its shield-shaped, its outer face decorated with three raised pierced cinquefoils against a red (gules) enamelled field. A square cross-sectioned attachment lug extends from the centre of the reverse of the mount.

Harness pendants were in use from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, with enamelled and heraldic types like this one predominating in the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries (Griffiths, 1995,62). This heraldic device is also seen on a mount from Spixworth, Norfolk illustrated by Ashley (2002, 13, fig.13, no.97), who attributes it potentially to the Darcy family of Lincolnshire (ibid., 47).

Length: 33.88mm, width: 28.71mm, thickness: 2.91mm, thickness incl. lug: 9.62mm, weight: 11.10g
