A fragment of late medieval (1250-1450) copper alloy T-shaped buckle consisting of the perforated integral plate only, and missing the frame. The breaks on the frame are old and worn.
The integral plate is tear-drop shaped and oval in cross-section, measuring 5.1mm in thickness. Its round (widest) end is 11.4mm wide with a trefoil of triangles projecting from it and at its centre a perforation 5.4mm in diameter. The opposite pointed end of the plate extends into the frame, on one side with a vertical rectangular indentation (presumably the pin rest) measuring c.4mm in length, 2.0mm in max.width and 1.6mm in depth. The plate is flanked to either side at the join with the frame, with a convex moulding. To the side with the pin rest this is decorated with a pair of diagonal ribs.
The frame has a surviving width of 21.5mm. The arms are thin (1.5mm) and narrow (max.4.1mm).
The metal is green in colour and slightly rough to touch. The object measures 25.0mm in length, 21.5mm in max.width, 5.1mm in max.thickness and weighs 5.79g.

Buckles with perforated projecting integral plates are thought to have functioned with a swivel (see NCL-5D3D67), perhaps as something like a dog's lead/ leash.
