BUCKLE

Unique ID: HAMP-F2ACB6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy openwork asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date, retaining an incomplete pin.
One loop of the buckle is D-shaped, with a highly elaborate outer edge protrusion, while the other is rectangular / trapezoidal and otherwise unadorned. The central rectangular-sectioned bar has a bifid knop at either end and the loops angle upwards slightly from it.
The elaborate edge protrusion is of openwork form with extensions from each opposing side of the D-shaped frame, angling outwards before angling inwards again to give the entire side of the buckle a pentagonal shape (with the axis bar as a base line). The openwork decoration comprises three heart-shapes, the largest inverted in the apex of the pentagon with the other two (slightly smaller) just below and on their sides with their narrow ends pointed inwards.
The pin shank is solid and missing its tip with a short projection to either side at its base. Behind this is a wider and thinner oval plate with a central rectangular slot, bent at its centre around the bar and secured against the base of the pin to the reverse with an incomplete plate projection.
The object has a lighted pitted mid-green patina and measures 35.8mm in length, 20.3mm in max.width (at the openwork protrusion), 5.8mm in depth and weighs 6.51g. The rectangular / trapezoidal edge of the frame measures 13.0mm in length and max.17.8mm x min.15.9mm in width (internal 9.7mm by 11.9 and 10.8mm).

Notes:

Whitehead (1996, 92-3) illustrates examples of less elaborate buckle frames but of similar form (ibid. nos.582-587 and 591-3, the latter being openwork) which he dates to c.1575-1700.
