An incomplete copper-alloy Aucissa, Bagenden Type C (Hull T52) of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 75. The head of the brooch is formed from a flat, rectangular panel which splits in two at the back and rolls up and round to form the integral hinge. An iron axis bar is retained within the rolled head and the slot would have allowed the pin to fit. The pin no longer remains.
From the front of the head plate an integral D-sectioned bow extends, terminating in a worn break. The front of the bow is decorated with two parallel grooves resulting in a raised spine with transverse grooved decoration. Two integral protruberances extend to either side of the remaining bow. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
The metal has a light brown patina and is worn. The brooch is 17.7mm long, 20.6mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 3.1g.
Similar brooches are illustrated in Hattatt (1982), p.97, fig.39, no.66 and are described as commonly being found at Colchester, Silchester and Cirencester, all pre-Roman and Iron Age centres.
