Medieval to Post Medieval c. AD 1279-1600, uniface, lead token or weight, one face bears, in relief, a long cross with a pellet in each of its arms. The back is plain. Diameter 25.8mm, Thickness 2.5mm, Mass 5.77g.
The design on this token appears to have been based on that seen on a Medieval silver penny of 'long-cross', (AD1279-1489) although conservatism may have allowed to series to continue to a later date. Other examples bear letters some of which look Post Medieval in style.
The function of these lead discs is also open to doubt. Some may been used as weights (see Egan, 2010, Fig. 232) for which a 14th century date is suggested, or had a religious role, being given to communicants either before or at Mass. They may have served as vouchers allowing access to food and drink or given as tallies to workers and later redeemed for pay or provisions. They may also have been gaming pieces.
