An incomplete copper alloy post medieval seal matrix with multiple dies dating to the period c. AD 1600 - 1700.

The seal matrix is in the form of a cross pattee with a circular perforated aperture from which the four arms of the cross extend.

The arms are oval in cross section and each terminates in a flared oval die each of which features a shallowly engraved design.

The designs include:

1) 7 pellets arranged with 6 in an outer circle and 1 in the centre. It is 11.8mm wide and 12.8mm long.

2) The letter "V" surrounded by the smaller letters "S C V," with the central V the first initial of the owner's surname and the smaller letters their entire initials. It is 12.4mm wide and 12.8mm long.

3) A swan proper gorged, with trailing chain and large ring between the legs. The swan is associated traditionally with the de Bohun family, however their extinction in the male line in the 15th century makes the association unlikely for this piece. It is 13.2mm wide and 13.4mm long. Swan's heads feature on the arms of the Crawley family of Prestwich, but this is highly speculative.

4) A mounted figure on horseback. This die is badly damaged and the least clear of the four dies. However, it is slightly reminiscent of designs on the coinage of Charles I, which may be further evidence for a mid-17th century date. It is 12.5mm wide and 12.7mm long.

Similar examples have been recorded on the database, include DENO-8A441E and HESH-BAE5EC. Further examples can be seen in Read (1988:152; no.1030, 1031).

The perforated aperture is 5.3mm in diameter. The entire object measures 32.4mm wide and 32.6mm in length. It weighs 14.13g.
