JETTON

Unique ID: SF-602A85

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete copper alloy post-medieval jetton dating to the period AD 1550-1590. Anonymous stock, obverse depicting the Rechenmeister seated facing right at counting table with money bags left and account book right within ornamental frame. Reverse depicts the alphabet ending YXZ and signed HS within a single line circular border. Minted in Nuremburg.

Sometimes referred to as 'school pennies', this type of jetton shows a rechenmeister, or accountant using jettons to do accounts on a chequered board or cloth (which is where we get the phrase Exchequer). The jettons depicted on the counting table may possibly be grouped to indicate the date, here for example 4 and 7 for 1547

Diameter: 27.42mm, Thickness: 1.01mm, Weight: 3.57g.
