A copper-alloy open type sheet thimble or 'sewing ring' of late medieval to early post medieval date, c. AD 1450-1600.
This thimble is circular in plan with sides which taper inwards from the bottom to the top. The outside is decorated with punched circular indents, arranged fairly regularly in four rows in a spiral. The metal has corroded to a dark brown and greenish patina. The splayed base was to allow an easier fit on the finger and is also chronologically diagnostic to the late Medieval or early Post Medieval periods (Holmes 1988, 3).
Measurements: 26.6mm diameter, 6.6mm thick, 4.61g weight.
