A fragment of an Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy small square-headed brooch (c. 450-c. 600).

This fragment is the head-plate and a piece of the upper bow.

The head-plate is rectangular in plan and moulded at the front. A raised border contains an inner rectangular beaded border which contains an elongated 'billet'. The outer edge of the head-plate is flat and has been stamped with evenly spaced annulets. The bow is sub-triangular in cross-section and moulded at the front. It has a central vertical rib, flanked on either side by two narrower ribs. Both of the inner ribs are beaded. The rear face is flat except for an incomplete pin-lug with iron staining around.

This brooch fragment is dull brownish green. There is no visible gilding.

There is no indication of melting or burning.

Height: 13.8mm; width: 18.0mm; thickness: 5.9mm. Weight: 1.74g

This brooch is similar to published examples (MacGregor and Bolick 1993: 121-124, refs: 14.3, 14.9 and 14.10).
