A fragment of a cast copper alloy brooch dating to the Roman period (AD 55-90).

An example of a hinged "initial" T shape brooch, comprising the wings, hinge and upper part of the bow. The ends of the wings are both damaged, and may have extended further than their extant span. The wings preserve two bands of moulded decoration which shadow the edge of the depression in which the cylindrical hinge is situated. The bow extends upwards from the wings, and tapers to a narrow flattened bar.

Bayley and Butcher provide a comparable example (Bayley and Butcher 2004: 158, no. T124) which they date to the Flavian period. This is an early form of hinged brooch, usually found with relief decoration as in this example.

It is 18.1mm in length and 27.1mm wide. The bow is 4.4mm thick. It weighs 7.05g.
