An incomplete post medieval cast copper alloy strap fitting, probably a sword belt mount, dating to the 16th century.

The plate is flat and is formed in the shape of a stylised large tapering oak leaf. It hs a tri-lobed end, with a central rounded lobe and two more angular lobes adjacent to it. There is an attachment hole in the centre of the central lobe. From this point the plate narrows before widening markedly, and then tapering once more before a final small wider section, which has two slightly beaked angular lobes akin to those on its end. The hook projects forward and ends with a globular knop. The ring which the hook would have once been attached to is now missing.

The front of the mount has raised, cast, floriate decoration in a design known as 'vine-scroll."

This is one of usually three fittings that together with a upper plate formed a hanging arrangement for a sword. Read (2008: 220, No.793) illustrates a complete example of such a hanger which he dates to the 16th century AD and there are several others on this database including SOM-EF4646.

It is 50.7mm in length and 18.2mm wide. It is 2.1mm thick on the plate and the hook is 3.4mm in diameter. It weighs 8.31g.
