A silver threepence dating to the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603).
Obverse:
Indiscernible bust due to wear aside from a crown and rose.
The coin bears the initial mark of a Ermine (1572-3) (Mitchell & Reeds 1997, 171).
The inscription is worn and in parts illegible: ELIZABETH/??/ANG/FR/ET.
The full inscription would have likely read: ELIZABETH/DG/ANG/FR/ET/HI/REGINA
Reverse:
A long cross fourchee over a shield displaying a royal coat of arms.
The coin is dated 1572.
The inscription is worn and in parts illegible: DEV AD /IVTORE /M/ ME?.
The full inscription would have read: POSVI/DEV AD/IVTORE/M MEV (I have made God my Helper).
Discussion
The rose to the left of the bust was used to distinguish the sixpence, threepence, three halfpence and threefarthings from the shilling, groat, half-groat and penny (Mitchell & Reeds 1997, 171).
The date and mark on this coin indicate it was a third issue (1561-77) (Mitchell & Reeds 1997, 176).
