A fragment of a gilded, copper alloy plate brooch of the centre boss type. Over half of the plate and all of the glass boss are missing. The plate was oval in shape with a raised rim around an oval recess to house the missing glass boss. The part of the plate framing the recess is decorated with two concentric grooves with a ridge between them and at the edge. These are gilded and decorated with stamped S-shapes on the outer band and stamped double annulets in the inner band. The rear of the plate is flat and undecorated. At one end it retains the stub of a single pierced lug for the attachment of a missing sprung pin.
Date: Roman - c. AD 250 - 400
Dimensions: 22.47 mm x 21.68 mm x 6.71 mm
Weight: 2.78 g

Bayley and Butcher (2004, 177-178) suggest this type (T271) date to the later third or fourth centuries with the glass insets typically having a conical top.
