Incomplete cast copper alloy disc brooch of Early Early-Medieval, fifth or sixth century date (AD 400 - AD 600). Diameter 24mm, thickness of plate 0.8mm. Weight 4.04g.

The brooch is circular in plan and was flat in cross-section although it is now bent slightly and has small breaks around the periphery. The front is decorated with two concentric incised circles around a central "dot". The dot is shallow and does not form a perforation. The outer of the two circles has a radius of about 4mm. Beyond this outer circle are four pairs of equally spaced "ring and dot" motifs that are on a diametric axis. Three of the pairs of motifs are close together but the fourth pair over-lap. On the reverse is a single elongated D-shaped and perforated lug to accommodate the pin mechanism. The lug is bent to one side and is 6.5mm in length and 5mm in width. The circular perforation is about 1.8mm in diameter and is filled with iron corrosion. Only the stub of the catch-plate has survived. The surfaces are corroded due to active bronze disease and no trace of tinning is evident. There is no evidence for burning or melting. All the breaks on the piece are old.
