An almost complete post-Medieval gold finger-ring (c. 1750-c. 1800).
The gem is incomplete.
This finger-ring has a split hoop with a raised decorative curvilinear feature on each shoulder. Below the shoulders the hoop has two circumferential grooves on the external face. The base of the hoop has been stamped with the numeral '18' and another mark which is illegible. The bezel is rectangular and the sides flare to a bevelled rim. The bezel contains a pinkish cut gem and his held in place by small 'claws'. The underside of the bezel is convex. The bezel is damaged but is complete and a small portion of the gem is missing where a break has occurred.
The gem, according to the finder, might be a topaz.
Height: 22.7mm; width: 18.3mm; length of bezel: 10.0mm; width of bezel: 9.0mm; thickness of bezel: 5.3mm. Weight: 2.95g.
Judy Rudoe of the Department of Britain, Europe and Prehistory at the British Museum has kindly given advice on the dating of this finger-ring.
