FINGER RING

Unique ID: WAW-8B2932

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

The object is probably a spiral finger ring of the late Iron Age. A similar example is found at Camerton (Jackson 1990), and the discussion considers whether these rings were also used as toe rings, currency and dress fastenings, but a finger ring seems most likely according to Jackson for the Camerton example.

The ring has been made by casting copper alloy. It is circular in plan. The ring is composed of a rounded rectangular sectioned rod which has formed a close fitting spiral of two almost complete loops. The surface of the ring has developed a shiny light blue/green coloured patina.

The ring weighs 16.72g and measures 28.7mm in diameter and 9.61mm thick across two spirals.
