A complete gold finger ring of post-medieval date. The finger ring is a 'posy' (or poem) ring, having an internal incised inscription reading 'We ioyne our harts in god'. Externally the band is plain and undecorated. The band is D-shaped in section and is quite wide. Religious and/or romantic inscriptions are common on such rings. They were given by men and women as an expression of love, as a wedding ring or as a means of showing regard and friendship; the inscription on this example indicates this may be a wedding band, and due to the size (internal diameter and width) was probably worn by a man.

Dimensions: Maximum internal diameter: 21.9mm. Thickness: 1.4mm. Width of band: 6.6mm. Weight: 8.9 grams.

Discussion: The simple style of this ring, which has no exterior decoration or particularly diagnostic typology, is difficult to date precisely. The style of the engraved lettering does however suggest a date based upon paleographical indicators and the use of an 'I' for a 'J' and in the spelling of 'hart' for heart. These suggest a date prior to the standardisation of English spelling in the later 18th century and thus a broad date range can be proposed of 17th - mid 18th century.

Conclusion: In the absence of a maker's mark this ring cannot be securely dated to pre-1719 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.
