MOUNT

Unique ID: ESS-7A0034

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Complete cast copper alloy mount. The mount is cross-shaped in plan and is formed from a trefoil with an extended subtriangular lobe that forms the main body of the cross. It is domed in section. It is 25.86mm long, 17.9mm wide and 5.66mm thick. The reverse of the mount lies along a thin length of metal, that is 20.94mm long before it turns down at 90 degrees to either end, giving the mount a double pronged fitting. Each prong is 16mm long and 3mm thick. It appears as if the mount is attached integrally, but a high level of corrosion may be hiding signs of soldering. The object is very abraded and worn and no original surface survives. It now has a light green patina. It weighs 13.30g.

The object is very rough and robust. Had it been finer in construction, with two integral pointed lugs, then it could be dated to the post-medieval period. However, the strange attachment of the mount to the prongs and the crudeness of the mount itself, suggest it could be from a later period. It is not dissimilar in form to undecorated two-pronged tacks that are used to hold two planks together. Ultimately dating is inconclusive, but the form makes it unlikely to be Iron Age or Roman.
