Incomplete lead conical spindle whorl of uncertain date, possibly Roman (c. AD 43 - 410). The sides of the object widen from a small circular face to a larger circular face, giving it a conical form. The smaller circular face has been truncated at an approximately 45 degree angle, leaving a rough white surface. The rest of the spindle whorl has a light brown patina. There is a central circular perforation which is 4.68mm in diameter. The spindle whorl is 19.31mm in diameter, 12.01mm in thickness and weighs 10.71g.
Lead spindle whorls are difficult to date precisely without archaeological context. Conical spindle whorls are known from Roman sites, however, and a possible Roman date is supported by the high incidence of Roman finds in the area where this example was found.
