Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date, possibly Roman (c. AD 43 - 410). The object is broadly circular in form; it is flat on one side and domed on the other, with a central circular perforation which is 5.81mm in diameter on the domed side and 7.92mm in the flat side. The object has a worn and pitted surface with a white patina. The spindle whorl is 23.27mm in diameter, 8.30mm in thickness and weighs 17.37g.
Lead spindle whorls are difficult to date precisely without archaeological context. The small central perforation of this one and the high incidence of Roman finds in the area where it was found may indicate a Roman date.
