SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: LANCUM-F760EE

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date, possibly Roman (c. AD 43 - 410). The object is broadly circular in form; it is flat on one side and domed on the other, with a central circular perforation which is 5.51mm in diameter. The object has a worn and pitted surface with a white patina. The spindle whorl is 21.44mm in diameter, 7.02mm in thickness and weighs 12.90g.

Lead spindle whorls are difficult to date precisely without archaeological context. The small central perforation of this one and the high incidence of Roman finds in the area where it was found may indicate a Roman date.
