Description:

An incomplete silver-gilt dress hook/hooked clasp, dating to the post medieval period (c.AD1500-1600).

The silver plate is cast in the form of a four-petalled flower surmounted by four conical bosses, with a further central conical boss. Each boss has a small central projecting knop. The surface of the front plate and conical bosses are decorated with gilt. The central boss seems to be a shade lighter in colour. There are also traces of gilt on the surface of the hook. The gilt on the tips of the central projecting knops of the bosses is worn and it is unclear if there were further attachments. The flower petals are triangular in shape and the bosses are formed of convex circular moulded-reliefs. The bottom left petal is bent back towards the reverse of the dress hook. There is an octagonal shaped silver sheet attached between the front plate and the central boss. This attachment has evidence of markings but it is unclear if this is decoration or ware. The attachment acts as a rivet to hold the central boss in place. The shank of the rivet passes through the drilled hole in the centre of the plate and forks into two, bending back towards the reverse of the plate. The transverse silver bar which would have been attached via solder to the reverse of the plate is missing. Projecting from the opposing end of the back face of the plate is a complete silver hook, bending backwards abruptly and tapering to a sharp point. The hook is circular in cross-section.

Discussion:

This object falls into Read's Early Post-Medieval Class D, Type 7 'quatrefoil' designation for single hooked clasps with a separate attachment bar. A similar type can be seen in Read, 2008, Hooked-Clasps & Eyes, page 82, fig. 276, which is also on the PAS database as record SF-EE91A8, and Treasure Case number 2004 T459.

Conclusion:

Due to the precious metal content of this object being over 10% gold, and it being over 300 years old, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
