Incomplete early Medieval cast Copper alloy strap end. AD 800 - AD 900
The strap end consists of a central shaft with a slightly damaged flat trapezoid plate terminal at the top with an inscribed border and a bifurcated end. There are two attachments holes through the two elements of the attachment end. Each contain a Copper alloy rivet. The shaft is half round in section, flat on the back and the lower end of the item has a moulded zoomorphic terminal. The terminal replicates a beast head with two circular hollows for eyes and a triangular incised border for the nose. The holes were once filled with paste or possibly glass or semi-precious stones.
The surface of the strap end is abraded, flaking and a mottled dark-green colour with base metal exposed. There is a trace of silvering in places and iron corrosion around the lower section.
The strap end measures 39.75 mm long, 10.65 mm wide and 3.27 mm thick. It weighs 4.73 g.
Thomas (2003) classifies these type of strap ends as Class B Type 1
