Copper alloy brooch fragment. Foot of a cast cruciform brooch, in the form of a zoomorphic horse head terminal. At the top a pair of moulded cross ridges separated this from the rest of the bow [lost]. A slightly keeled longitudinal central ridge bears small horizontal slashes along its crest. A slight expansion at the midpoint also marks the positions of two moulded round eyes and, in profile view, the thickest part of the brooch foot. The object then tapers slightly towards a pair of ovals representing the flared nostrils of the horse, with a pair of incised lines dividing them. The object has a dark surface patina overall. This may come from a disturbed early Anglo-Saxon grave, though the surface condition does not indicate it has been subject to prolonged abrasion: the disturbance may have been relatively recent. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 410-600

Length: 32.2mm, Width: 11.9mm, Thickness: 4.1mm, Weight: 5.19gms
