A complete lead-alloy spindle whorl of Medieval to Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1200 - 1800. The spindle whorl is annular/barrel shaed with a central perforation running through it. The upper face is decorated with a cast, openwork, eight-pointed star. The underside has an irregular series of linear, incised lines. The circumferential face is decorated with a series of incised icons, including a five-petalled flower, two-headed arrows, and chevrons.
The metal has a pale cream/light grey patina. It is abraded on all surfaces and mesaues 24.7mm in diameter (external), 11.8mm in thickness, 9.9mm diameter (internal), and weighs 39.5g in weight.
Lead spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the Post-Medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty. Decorated examples are thought to date to the Medieval to Post-Medieval periods while undecorated examples cannot be securely dated without supporting contextual evidence.
