BROOCH

Object type certainty: Certain

A fragment of a copper alloy cruciform brooch, dated to the early Medieval period. The fragment consists of a zoomorphic foot of the brooch, which represents what is possibly a stylised horse's head. Below the break is an engraved chevron above a pair of prominent knops that represent the horse's eyes. Below these knops appear to be two engraved chevrons - though these have mostly been worn down. To either side of these chevrons are a pair of sub-circular expanded plates reflecting exaggerated nostrils. The plates are decorated with a repeating punched ring and dot motif. A single oblique groove separates the plates from the projection directly underneath them. This projection extends from between the plates to create an almost anvil-like shape. The punched ring and dot motif is repeated on this projection.

The back of the brooch is entirely undecorated, with a slightly raised uneven surface towards the break. This is potentially where the pin rubbed against the brooch.

The entire brooch is worn and damaged, though some evidence of a coating of some sort can be seen.

An almost identical item can be seen at NARC-BDD437
