An incomplete copper alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 200. The head is ovate with a moulded rim and traces of a projection protruding from the top of the outer rim where the head would probably have connected to a headloop, which now terminates in a worn break. Attached to the underside of the head is a spring mechanism consisting of three remaining loops around a central axis bar. The loops remain on the right side of an integral lug, as viewed from the underside of the brooch. Corrosion obscures the central axis bar and adheres to the left side of the lug, where the spring has been lost. No trace of the pin remains. An oval-sectioned bow projects centrally from the base of the head with a D shaped downward curve. Mid-way along the bow, at the apex of the curve, is a circular acanthus moulding with a double banded moulded collar at top and bottom. The bow continues below the moulding with a D-shaped section but terminates at a worn break, where the foot has been lost. On the underside of this section of the bow are traces of the base of the upper portion of a catchplate, most of which has been lost to worn breaks.
The metal is green in colour. The brooch is 30.2mm in length, 12.6mm in width, 9.7mm thick at the head, 5.8mm thick at the acanthus moulding, 3.6mm thick at the bow, and weighs 6.6g.
Parallels are illustrated in Hattatt (2000), p.326, fig.185, dated to the 1st-2nd centuries AD. Similar brooches have been recorded on the database as YORYM-A4570C, YORYM-44F005, and YORYM-B8DB6C.
